Uniting the creative visions of artist Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa, Teshima Art Museum stands on a hill on the island of Teshima overlooking the Inland Sea. Shaped like a drop of water, the museum lies in a corner of the spacious grounds surrounded by once-fallow rice terraces that have been restored with help from local residents. Structurally, the building consists of a concrete shell, devoid of pillars, coving a space 40 by 60 meters. On the ceiling 4.5 meters above, two oval openings allow the air, sounds, and light of the world outside into this organic space where nature and architecture seem intimately interconnected. Inside one finds an ever-flowing fountains and an ambiance that changes from hour to hour and season to season, revealing countless appearances as time passes.

798 Art District, also called Dashanzi is not only China’s but probably the world most avant-garde and exciting art district. The graffiti covered Bauhaus style buildings, huge sculptures on the street and the tree lines streets are home to the biggest collection of galleries, studios and contemporary art in China.

Built in 1950’s by the East Germans, this neighborhood was designed as a complex of factories.. At the beginning of 2000’s the whole area has started to be the mecca for the contemporary art and design scene. Apart from the most extravagant galleries like Red Gate, 798 Red Space, 798 Photo gallery, Beijing Commune, there are also cafes and restaurants and bookstores. Timezone 8 Editions is a combination of gallery, restaurant and cafe and is a must visit space.

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a place where people can view the world through design.
It will be not so much a museum as a research center for design, a place for thinking about design, and a place where things are actually made. The aim is to share views and ideas with the many parties involved in design, starting with designers and including companies, craftsmen and engineers, as well as consumers, and to launch a movement to foster interest in, and greater understanding of design.
The planning for the various programs at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is carried out by three directors and one associate director. The directors are designers Issey Miyake, Taku Satoh, and Naoto Fukasawa, and the associate director is Noriko Kawakami.
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT will stage two major exhibitions a year. Each will tackle a single theme and be organized by a single directors, all of whom are familiar with the creative scene, who will address everyday topics of concern to all of us based on his or her own experiences. Through a process of examination, investigation, and realization of programs together with people from a variety of genres, it is hoped that 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT will be able to present a range of unique design perspectives and new ways of looking at and interpreting the world around us.
